Collabtive is an online project management system that allows users to get together and access common information to complete group projects, even if they aren’t in the same area. The system has been around since 2007, and is used by tens of thousands of people to complete all sorts of different projects. This is an open source system, which makes it easier to get into the back end and make any programming changes that are needed as well.

There is a lot to like about this system, but unfortunately, the developers are not putting out updates anymore. The last major release was in 2009, and at that point they were still working on creating an effective plugin system. Getting this system up and running is really easy. Installation is done with the one-click installation scripts that all InterServer customers have access to. Once installed, people will be able to access it from any computer that has Internet connectivity. Creating projects is pretty easy, and adding in additional users doesn’t take much time at all. Overall, the initial setup of Collabtive is really well-done and effective.
Plugins
The plugin system is still in its infancy and doesn’t really work the way a fully developed system would. There are certain things you can do, but unless you are a skilled developer, it is not likely that you will be using any type of plugins with this platform.
Themes
There doesn’t seem to be a theme system available with this platform. You can make some changes to layout and color schemes and things like that, but that is done just using the normal settings on the admin side of the platform. This is not typically going to be a huge deal since project management systems are more about getting things done than they are about the way the system looks.
Customization
There isn’t really too much that you can customize with this system. They don’t have a good theme or plugin system, which limits users quite a bit. Each project will be unique, so that is something, and there are also options for adjusting user settings and things like that. For the most part, however, what you see is what you get with Collabtive.
Cost of Running
The platform itself is free to download and use for whatever type of projects you would like. The only expense you will have is for hosting, which his necessary to ensure everyone can access the project management pages.
